Social science – cultural influences, values, and controversial issue

The research in this project is conducted from an inclusive perspective, i.e. it will ultimately help teachers to both reach and develop more students. The research questions are primarily posed from two different starting points that can act as obstacles to inclusive teaching: language and culture. Research concerning the disciplinary language deals with concepts and models to facilitate understanding of the subject for all students. Research based on culture recognizes that the subjects, not least social studies, can be understood in different ways and from different perspectives and that this is often culturally rooted. Research from this point of view tries to both map these differences and to bridge them.

In this project some research questions are more of an exploratory nature:
– How do boys and girls perceive gender equality in history, today?
– How do students understand the causes of the Holocaust?

Other research questions are more of an elaborate nature:
– How can subject concepts be used to highlight different perspectives on controversial issues?
– What tools do students need to be able and willing to understand the perspectives of others?
